The Dems operate under a huge advantage. Because they live and operate in a milieu of crooks and liars, when one of their own turns to give testimony against them they cry "unreliable", because the guy who turned was invariably a fellow crook and previous liar. That helped Clinton immensely and it saved Torricelli. I believe the Torricelli defense was that the the guy was a fellow crook and liar and that it wasn't illegal to take bribes from friends. Torriceli, again like Clinton, also was helped by the fact that the media was largely uninterested in reporting on Dem corruption, either because that's not a story (dog bites man) or not the type of story that fits their slant.
