Why does the devil have horns and cloven feet plus a tail?? weird.

In the "good old days" (and including yours <ggg>), although the population was smaller, there was however a relatively higher percentage of illiterate and uninformed folks.

An effective way of conveying to the unlettered and the hoi polloi that the devil is evil and a monster is to depict him as a very ugly and fearsome being. Go to any cathedral built in pre-Renaissance Europe and you will see the story of good and evil depicted in works of art on the walls (inside and outside the building). Without exception, the devil is always represented as a most repulsive and fearsome creature. Apparently such representations readily registered in the consciousness of the illiterate, the unwashed and the peasants! And such depictions have been "inherited" and are being used by us moderns to good effect <ggg>.
