natural way to regain face is to invade Iraq, all on our lonesome.

Well, I hardly see us launching a full-scale "invasion" of Iraq. I still believe we'll try and coordinate air strikes and SpecOps with local dissident elements.

After all, Saddam's regime is a house of cards waiting to fall in upon itself, given the right motivation and confidence. Look at how Somoza fell in Nicaragua, once the people rallied behind a relatively small group of marxist guerillas. Of course, it matters not that they later lived to regret supporting the Sandinistas, falling victim to Borge's "neighborhood watch" commissars.

Or the Taliban.... Or any number of other dictators who were able to repress their people only because other nations followed a policy of non-interference.

But when we interfere, we can make things happen. The question is whether we're prepared for the aftermath of our actions, and what the strategy is for rebuilding the country "under new management"..

Right now, I want to see the Arab world "afraid". I want the Arab leadership to realize just how much MORE precarious their hold on power can be made should the US choose to do so.

It may require the US actually taking as activist a role in vying for muslim hearts and minds, as the extremist elements. We can offer economic development and political freedom, as well as all that nifty technology the extremists are afraid of. That will put the corrupt Arab regimes at as much risk from US plans, as those of the extremists.
