Compaq to Make Announcement about Product Sales Since September

Apr 08, 2002 (The Dallas Morning News - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via
COMTEX) -- Compaq Computer Corp. will announce Monday that it has sold more than
$900 million worth of data storage devices and software since September, a sign
that it's succeeding in attempts to grab market share by offering lower prices.

Customers include Dollar Rent A Car Systems Inc. of Tulsa, Okla.; Valley Baptist
Health System of Harlingen, Texas; and Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale, Ark.

Companies' increasing reliance on information technology caused sales of storage
capacity equipment to soar in the late 1990s. The growth slowed in recent years
but is expected to grow to more than $26 billion in 2003, according to research
firm International Data Corp.

Houston-based Compaq has tried to best rivals such as EMC Corp. by cutting
prices. Compaq chief executive Michael Capellas has said the company's efforts
have allowed it to cut prices and make a healthy profit at the same time.

Compaq and EMC both claim they hold the most market share in data storage. It's
difficult to measure because each holds a lead in different devices.
