8:55AM: The market is expected to start on a much better note today than it did yesterday as a batch of companies offering upbeat earnings guidance, including Compaq (CPQ 9.59), reports that Israel has withdrawn from some West Bank cities, and the market's resilience yesterday following IBM's warning have helped lend a measure of support... Even Early gains, though, expected to be relatively modest in scope as the S&P futures, +1.80, are 2.80 points above fair value while the Nasdaq 100 Pre-Market Indicator is up 7.54 points.
