On Xbox, I think the story is not about technology. It is about control of the market.

There are some people who are still intimidated by PCs, and a concept of closed box - PlayStation is very appealing to them. That would be fine with MSFT. But Sony started taking PS to what MSFT considered as its own turf. So, with MSFT mentality, a conflict is unavoidable. So MSFT attacked PS/2 and Sony head-on.

I think it is still MSFT's intention to eventually bring X-box users to the Windows fold, once Sony and playstation are gone. I think that's the game-plan.
