They along with others keep talking about how the action by Israel is creating the next generation of suicide bombers. I can't believe this crap. Well, we are on distinctly different sides on this one, William. I don't often agree with Brian Williams but I certainly do on this one. I haven't tracked Alter's views all that well over the years so I don't know about him, save he just wrote a very favorable, very long piece on Clinton in retirement. We should all get that glowing a piece in that prominent a place. As for what I think you are missing is that the Palestinians, at least before this latest Israeli incursion, were not of one mind. My guess is there were more than several, with most just wanting to get on with their daily lives and, by the way, they would like to see a bit of economic hope in their lives. The incursions have had the effect of, and will continue to have the effect of, creating a Palestinian population of one mind--rage. That's not good for the Israelis nor, in fact, for the Palestinians. But it will be there; for a very long time. Count on it. Nadine, in response to this, makes a very good point. What would I have Sharon do instead? And, for the moment, I can only reply, something like "something else." I don't know the terrain well enough to offer some sort of nuanced position that I would be happy to defend. It's one thing to see the very severe downsides of a given strategy; it's another to be able to see the specifics of a better. I'm just starting reading the thread from last evening--120 posts behind, but if no one has already posted it, I will post Nicholas Kristoff's op ed piece in this morning's New York Times as one piece that better reflects my views.
