"If we fought like Americans 15 Israelis would be alive today"

Aaron Lerner Date: 9 April 2002

From the moment the IDF allowed publication of news of the death of 13 more soldiers today in Jenin (in addition to the two killed yesterday) both Israel Radio and IDF Radio have broadcast interviews with various military experts - all using the same line: "if we fought like Americans this would not happen."

While some commentators took pride that Israel does not follow the American model of demolishing targets from the air and instead endangers the lives of soldiers to avoid hurting civilians, others charged that it was immoral to
sacrifice Israeli lives in order to avoid killing noncombatants who knowingly provide cover for terrorists and who refuse to leave the area when afforded the opportunity to evacuate.

Defense commentator Ron Ben Yishai noted on Israel Radio that while Israelis died because Israel did not demolish buildings from the air that the 13 Israelis killed today died when the Palestinian terrorists demolished a building the entered - "the Palestinians don't hesitate to demolish Palestinian buildings to kill Israelis."
