Really, all you need to know is that ethanol costs more energy than it provides. Otherwise they would use ethanol to make more ethanol, not oil. And they wouldn't need a subsidy.

It reminds me of an old Superman episode where the crooks kidnapped a professor and his machine that made gold.

The problem was that the machine consumed platinum to make gold. At a huge loss.

The difference here is that while the "Superman" crooks lost money, with ethanol the crooks make the taxpayer take the loss while they profit.
