Apr 09, 2002 (The Courier-Mail - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian retailers
report a sharp fall in computer sales since the introduction of the goods and
services tax. According to Harvey Norman chairman, Gerry Harvey, nearly all
electronic products are selling well, except for personal computers, with DVD
players, wide-screen televisions and digital cameras displacing the computer as
hot sellers. Harvey says computer users no longer want to upgrade the equipment
as frequently as they used to, and that when they do upgrade, they are only
buying components. His comments come as US computer giant IBM issued its first
profit warning since the early 1990s, citing sluggish 2002 first-quarter sales.
