Joe
just last night I read on the topic and I'll try to find link. While it makes very little difference to me as of construction of my blood, although last time I cut myself it looked red, the link analyzed the heritage and decided that there are clear semitic features present.
Khazars were not of semitic tribes yet recognized as Jews by Jews. From what I recall Khazars were religious tolerant and most in the small country were not Jews to begin with. Whoever was religios was easily absorbed by East European and Russian Jews. Later on there was jews coming from Western Europe as well.
But the bottom line is that my blood is red (regardless composition) and I am proud of my heritage and even though I am not religious I think that makes me a Jew
