I think that you answer the question of who is right when you say-

>>They both can't be right or even anywhere near right.<<

Split the difference. Economists predicting "huge expansion" + CEOs predicting "declining sales"=

>>A flat economy <<with certain sectors growing (maybe oil, drugs and retail although I think retail will lead the second leg down) and certain sectors continuing to be flat to negative (probably technology)

(in edit)

I would add that stocks in certain sectors are still vastly overvalued imo and now is not the time to go long the market unless you are a trader.

Limtex
1) Do NOT confuse economic expansion with profit expansion.
They are NOT the same. There is too much competition, too much supply, too much capacity, and too little interest from the public (or corporations for that matter) to buy anything that is not at a steep discount
2) You seem to be discarding TOTALLY the double dip possibility
3) You have your faith in eccomists that
a) did not see the recession at all
b) kept predicting expansion
c) called the bottom at least 3 times already

The economists have ZERO credibility.
You seem to have a major disconnect here.
You believe those that are saying what YOU WANT TO HEAR.
Trust me. Been there done that too damn many times myself.

Yes we will have bear market rallies, but that is it.

limtex: CEOs are wealthier than economists. That's really all you need to know.

limtex,

Which "serious" economists say 4-6% GDP growth this year? And do you believe them?
