DJ MARKET TALK: Cisco Warning Not Likely, But...

Edited by Thomas Granahan Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES (Call Us: 201-938-5299; All Times Eastern) MARKET TALK can be found using code N/DJMT

8:34 (Dow Jones) Merrill Lynch calls an earnings preannouncement from Cisco (CSCO) "unlikely," despite warnings already from IBM and Nortel (NT). Citing industry sources and channel checks, Merrill expects Cisco to meet the firm's estimates, but says the final weeks of the quarter, which ends later this month, "will be crucial." The firm maintains its buy rating and sees a price greater than $20 likely over the next 12 months. CSCO closed Tuesday at $14.82. (GS)

8:30 (Dow Jones) As disheartening as Tuesday's action may have been, buck up - the internals look better than the major averages. OK, that doesn't help much now. But it also appears the selling that inflicted a better-than-2% slide on the Nasdaq Comp later in the day will not reassert itself, at least at the open. E.W. Scripps (SSP) and SunTrust (STI) top views, while one of the major laggards yesterday, Cisco (CSCO), didn't confirm rumors by issuing a profit warning. Stock futures are looking up a tad, Treasurys are flat, and optimism continues that Yahoo! (YHOO) will top views after the bell. (TG)

08:35 ET SEBL Siebel Systems estimates cut at SoundView on Gartner survey (27.56)
Hearing from sources that SoundView maintains HOLD and cuts target to $35 from $40; sees SEBL making current qtr but is cutting estimates for FY02 and FY02 to $0.55 and $0.72, below First Call estimates of $0.58 and $0.75; cites Gartner/SoundView survey which suggests there will be no tangible uptick in CRM spending until Q4; also sees modest risk to 2002 license revenue and EPS estimates for ORCL and SAP on basis of this survey
