I am not sure why you say that. You can look up some history books. I did recently on early Slavs, history of slavic tribes. Everything prior to around 900s is somewhat vague, because of a lack of written accounts, since there has not been a lot of research done in those parts of the world as far as archeology, and even if it was, sometimes just there is just no hard evidence to be found.

Anyway, Khazars figure very prominently in these texts, one of the reasons was that there was a period of time when they were very successful. By success in those days, they considered defeating their neighbors and making them pay tribute to the conquerers.
