BRISBANE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2002--bebe stores, inc. (Nasdaq:BEBE - news) today reported retail sales of $26.1 million for the month ended March 31, 2002, an increase of 11.5% over sales of $23.4 million for the month ended March 31, 2001.

Same store sales for March decreased 3.5% compared to a decrease of 1.8% in the prior year.

Retail sales for the nine months ended March 31, 2002 were $240.9 million compared to $219.4 million for the corresponding period last year, an increase of 9.8%. Comparable store sales for the nine months ended March 31, 2002 decreased 5%.

``While the acceptance or our spring product offering has been exceptional, March sales and margin results fell short of our expectations; this was due to lower than planned inventory levels,'' said John Kyees, chief financial officer. Given these results, the company expects earnings to be impacted by $.02. In addition, the company will also incur a one-time charge associated with the write-off of fabric, which will also impact earnings by $.01.
