Is it possible that you downloaded the wrong version of Acrobat? Win2000/xp require a different version than previous operating systems. After the download, did you shut down any running applications during the install of Adobe? Firewalls and anti-virus programs can interfere and muck up an installation. If you didn't do these things I'd uninstall Adobe through add/remove programs and try installing it again. The initial install may have gone bad.
