At this point, I wonder how much real power Arafat has over Palestinians. I have to say that these demands (by Bush and Powel) that Arafat does A, B, C and D is a little silly.

It seems to me that the situation is so out of control that even if Powell gets the 2 sides to negotiate, I doubt Arafat can deliver anything (even if he really wanted to).


Joe, I think Bush and Powell made a mistake scheduling this trip. I can understand how they would.....there is a great deal of pressure to do something. However, the only people who can do something are Arafat and Sharon, and they won't....they are counting on the US and other countries to stop them and save their butts. In the meantime, they are acting like two spoiled kids carrying on a long time feud.

I think Powell will spin his wheels and we will come out looking inept. Unfortunately, Powell put his ass on the line on this one, and now he will lose his positioning in the Bush administration. That may be a good thing.....I don't know.
