Thanks, Karen. A lot is overlooked in the "priest feeding frenzy"...

One thing being the extent to which medical views on pedophilia have changed in the last decade or two. There was a time when pedophilia was widely regarded as an illness that could be cured. The emphasis then (when the abuse in a lot of these current cases actually occurred) was on treatment rather than punishment. Medical views have hardened a lot since then in the direction of incurability. This may be just one piece of the puzzle that may explain why the church was befuddled in how to react to these cases in times past. (I'm not saying this is an excuse, only that it may be a partial explanation).
