"he is attacking a set of opinions and beliefs"

There is a place for that. On "Should God be Replaced" we have many discussions about opinions and beliefs; and all ideas are welcomed to be discussed. I generaly have no interest in such on general Boards of a broader focus, unless my integrity is being challenged.

In this case, my simple comment that the bible was filled with racism (hardly a novel insight) was meant with a denial. I asked him to leave it alone because I saw where he was intentionally trying to take it...away from 3000 years ago, and ahead into modern times.

I was compelled to defend my statement that there was slavery, racism, sujugation, and genocide in the bible. It was a true statement, and he insisted I defend it. The defense had nothing whatsoever to do with my feelings about any religion.

My own opinions about the harm justified by religious authority are well known, but this was not here either the task or the intent. Had I been a Christian or a Jew, I would have defended the statement (that the bible weas full of racism) in exactly the same way. What barbarians did 3000 years ago does has naught to do with you or I, or our characters.

The attempt was made to cast it in the framework of a different kind of attack (very cleverly, too), and it appears to have partially suceeded.

I consider most of what Solon has done to be fair.

I do, too. (Although he gets a bit, er, exuberant at times and long winded always.) He makes no bones about his distaste for religion, but I've never seen anything personal in it. He's no anti-semite. Or misanthrope, either. A bit cranky sometimes... <g> I think he just poked Neo at the wrong time.

Lotta crankiness around here lately.
