To follow up, Arafat could not tolerate being head of an autonomous Palestinian state, nor could the state tolerate him. As I stated before, his only tool is a hammer -- terrorism --and he knows nothing more. Therefore, any state created by him needs international sanctions and inspections for terror, but his failures would be prominent.

I know that didn't work in Iraq, but Arafat doesn't have an army or any real resistence to international inspections.

His fear of success may explain why he didn't consider the Barak proposal -- or even let the Palestinian press release it.

>>>terror is now is inevitable and unavoidable. The question becomes how it can become limited. Sharon is breeding it.<<<

This is a notion that few of the Israeli's will ever accept. His violence against the Palestineans is a primary cause of the current situation.

Your idea that Sharon should spend more energy on securing reduced Israeli borders would yield a more stable Israel.

If Arafat is detained or exiled how much worse could things get? Are the other Arab states in a position to do anything more than protest verbally?

Nah Fred.
Blaming Sharon for defending his country is wrong. I as a Jew has a dog in this fight. I as an Ameican have a dog in this fight. Yes Sharon maybe a bulldog but he is currently my bulldog. Blaming him is succumbing to that moral equivalency argument. Many, many worse "oppressions" than the Palestine one have and continue to occurr. Only the Palestinians and their arab bretheren buy into homocide bombing. Only they run telethons for the families of murderers. Maybe we should do that to for the family of Jeffrey Dahmer, or J. Wayne Gacy or david Berkowitz. Israelis are behaving badly you imply. I maintain they have behaved much as we have in Afghanistan and both US and Israel have behaved better than all others who engage in military operations. Remember the US firebombing of Tokyo, the british destruction of dresden, the hutu massacre of tutsis, and so on. US and Israel today dont even begin to approach it. mike
