I have a simple question about the montagnards...why are they called by a French name? what do they call themselves?

Nadine,
the word Montagnard was coined during the french occupation of southeast asia. the word is thought to mean mountain tribesmen. it is pronounced mountainyard.

Americans changed it to "yards" during our stay.

the yards call themselves Montagnards or refer to their tribe. for example: Jarai, Bahner, Rade, Koho, Sedang, etc.
there are a total of 30 tribes with 50-60 different languages and dialects all derived from either Mon-Kmer or Malayo-Polynesian groups. the first writing is from the mid 1800s.

they are not a pure race (is there any)...they have been traced to Ameranians, Negroids, Polynesians, Melanesians and Indonesians and others.

Indochina has been the land's end of the asian continent...many human migrations ended there. thus the wide mix.

they have a matriarchal society...most of their property is usually in the women's name. they are intensely loyal, smart, clean, industrious and quite adapatable. they have proven generation after generation that they are willing to fight for personal freedoms.

the vietnamese have always considered the Yards an inferior race and have pursued a policy of containment and obliteration since forever.
