WLAN Equip Market to Reach $3.7B in 2006, IDC Says

Online staff -- Electronic News, 4/10/2002

The market for wireless local area network (WLAN) equipment is expected to affect the market for network equipment much in the same way that mobile phones affected the traditional voice network, according to research company IDC.

Worldwide revenue WLAN equipment totaled $1.5 billion in 2001, up 34 percent from the previous year, the Framingham, Mass.-based company said. This market is expected to reach $3.7 billion in 2006, IDC said.

"Mobile connectivity is being driven by the acceptance of wireless devices and infrastructure both in and out of the enterprise. Entrenched data networking vendors, primarily those selling LAN switches, routers and IP VPNs will integrate WLANs as part of their overall networking strategies," said Jason Smolek, a research analyst for enterprise networks at IDC. "But, perhaps, the largest opportunity will come from the SOHO and home networking space, where Asia/Pacific vendors are driving WLANs to the masses in all corners of the world."

According to IDC, there are four factors driving WLAN adoption: new verticals such as education and retail; deployment in visitor-based networks such as airports and hotels; use in the SOHO/home networking space; and the introduction of 5GHz products (802.11a and HiperLAN/2). IDC said it believes large enterprises will drive spending later in the forecast period, though old economy processes like manufacturing and warehousing will remain strong.
