Eric - There are a number of ways a VOIP system can get availability without specific high reliability of individual components. The "blade" architectures, combined with Unix or Linux could do a good job. Probably embedded NT of some flavor could also, but Telco in general is a Unix stronghold.

I suspect that HP's use of CompactPCI for their blades was targeted at this market. Sun could get in there easily.

My comment was only in regard to availability, not in Sun's ability to do this application.

Wasn't Tandem in the middle of converting from MIPS to Alpha when the Alpha got canned? Now I think they're going to the Itanium -- that ought to set them back a bit.
