I've heard Hamas's comments as well, they make no bones about pushing the people of Israel into the sea. Sharon is creating a situation on the ground wherein Arafat will not survive once Israel pulls out. European respect or not, someone else will ultimately take Arafats's place, which was likely Sharon's goal from the start of all this. "Did the groups that the South African government eventually negotiated with proffer such a discourse?" -- I think not. I do recall, however, Margaret Thatcher saying she could never negotiate with Nelson Mandella because he was a terrorist.
