Toshiba Almost Ready to Begin Chinese Shipments
bwcs.com

(12/04/2002, BWCS Staff) Japanese handset vendor Toshiba has revealed that it plans to begin deliveries of handsets to Chinese mobile operator China Unicom next month, following last week's opening of its manufacturing plant in China. China Unicom, which launched a CDMA service at the start of the year to complement its existing GSM networks, had around 30 million cellular subscribers by the end of February.

The company s executive vice-president Tetsuya Mizoguchi remains upbeat about the prospects for handset sales in countries such as China, despite recent falls in shipments. He told Bloomberg News:  I doubt the handset market is saturated. It will expand, for example, in emerging markets. A mobile device is something every single person needs.  The past few weeks have brought mixed news for Toshiba; while it was awarded a contract last month to supply i-mode handsets to German operator E-Plus, the manufacturer says that in the year to the end of March it shipped 6.4 million handsets, down from 8.7 million the year before.
