<just cram for the SEC exams,>

Well I have a friend, way too honest to be a broker, but got started in the business in a mutual fund call center for a Bank. He is on their licensure program track. He would call me to answer and explain the parts/questions he didn't understand. Of course I had little idea about any of the Security Law/Code/Regulatory technical questions, but helped him on the application of some terms, option calculation, hedging strategies, financial statement, type word problems.

I privately swore he would never pass. He knew he shouldn't have passed. But he did. With a big margin for error.

Oh by the way. You have to be "sponsored" to even get near sitting for that test or liscense. Sponsored as in by a brokerage firm. You can't just be financial degreed and apply to take it.
