Not that I like it but really bad social engineering by those who argue for heavy government involvement bothers me less then indifferent social engineering by people who usually argue that government should leave us alone.

I see your point, but I see it as collaborating with the enemy. I know that government programs for social engineering are seductive. If the relative "good guys" are going for it, we're lost and that is scary. So, I'm annoyed by the hypocrisy, but mostly I worry about the trend. Of all the unfortunate trends in this country, I find that the most worrisome.

What do you think about welfare requiring recipients to make an effort to get a job

I'm against any long-term transfer payments to individuals. I tolerate short-term programs like unemployment. If it's necessary to supplement the income of workfare recipients, I would prefer providing services to cash.
