"I would like to die knowing that my name would be on a final peace agreement."

That applies much more to Sharon!
What other fate can that mortal have ?
He is Israeli's greatest warrior. Did them all. Possibly the greatest general : Alexander conquered, but died in his thirties, Bonaparte lost it all, Rommel and Guderian, lost too.
And, now, in his mid seventies, he feels strong enough to say "niet" to Bush and get away with it, but also to secure a safe peace for his people, for ever if his strategies succeed. And he has strategies, but never shared them.

Even king David won't be able to compete agaisnt such a record.

I was under the impression that Arafat had the same goals. But he made me change my mind a few weeks ago. He also has a secret strategy. But not for a second Nobel price, unfortunately.

Arafat thinks he is a second Saladin, he dreams of driving the Crusaders (i.e. Israel) into the sea. Because of this dream, he can only accept temporary truces, that is, whatever lies he tells the West, he tells his own guys in Arabic that it's just a temporary truce.

Clinton's deal was a nightmare for him because it delivered over 95% of what he was claiming to want, but on condition it was a final deal. Arafat had never prepared either the Palestinians or the hard-liners for peace (hell, he never told his own negotiators what his bottom line was). Just the opposite, the PA has been educating the Palestinians for hating the Jews and reclaiming ALL of occupied Palestine.

So Arafat walked away and started a war. His chosen epitaph is: I never betrayed the dream. His legacy to his people: a great, supparating sense of grievance.
