Re: IBM Deskstar HDs are total crap, I regret to say.

I know that IBM began sourcing (some or all) of its IDE drives from an Asian source shared with WD a couple of years ago, and that their quality has since dropped (while WD's seems to have risen - go figure).

We contiue to have good luck with IBM's SCSI drives (though their support is... strange), but have seen failures of the IDE drives (where, somwhat surprisingly, support was better).

I suppose that requires explanation. Our IDE issues have been a couple of drive failures, which were replaced without a problem. We've had no SCSI drive failures, as such, but did run into a firmware issue, that affected array reliability (the server drives had upgradeable firmware), and it was like pulling teeth to get access to the corrected firmware - why they would restrict access to a downloadable fix is beyond me.

Here's a note about it:
Problems with IBM DDYS hard disks
If problems are encountered using IBM DDYS hard disks, we suggest, as recommended by the IBM hotline, to upgrade the firmware version of the hard disk to the latest release.
To get the firmware update, please contact the IBM help center
Help Desk - Phone: 1-507-5825
Toll-Free - Phone: 1-888-426-5214
Fax: 1-507-253-3748
E-mail: storage.ibm.com

They send you the fix by email - they won't just post it on their site. Make work for phone techs?

Re: IBM Deskstar HDs are total crap

FWIW I just defraged a Deskstar 40GB 7200 RPM drive yesterday that showed what I would consider a large number of bad sectors. Drive is only three months old and about 5% full.

Kap, Re: IBM Deskstar HDs are total crap, I regret to say. Out of six 60GB, 7200 RPM drives ordered, two were dead on arrival and one died after a month of operation.

I have used 4 - 30 GB, 7200 RPM IBM Deskstar IDE Hard drives from a year or so back and have had solid results so far...knock on wood! One of them is in a server at this moment(ugg!), the others in Win98 clients. I hope the quality decline occurred after they were manufactured.

Hard drive failure is the last thing any of us needs!

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan
