Do you really think that the president of the United States should go overseas, when even with looking people in the eyes, he was unlikely to get results? The prestige of the office would be harmed. I really do not believe that given the circumstances, either Arafat or Sharon could just cave into American pressure. Arafat would be dead in a New York Minute if he were to try and crack down on Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Sharon would lose his coalition in seconds. New Israeli elections would be forced and the result would be a hardline government in Israel which would not help the situation along one bit. The moods on both streets dictate a much more cautious approach, in opinion.
