I don't see how that says they used the code. To me it seems to say they copied the displays

when they use the word "visual display" they are talking about the "GUI" or the "graphic user interface"..... when they are talking about interface programs, they are talking about actual "code" or interface Code or GUI code if you wish.... ..

to use these words in substitute they might have said:

"Microsoft acknowledged that the GUI for Windows 1.0 was derived from the GUI generated by Apple's GUI interface Code".....

(although i used the word "interface" redundantly, i thought it might make it more clear for you).....is that helpful?

here is the quote again....

Microsoft acknowledged that the "visual displays" used in Windows 1.0 were "derivative works of the visual displays generated by Apple's Lisa and Macintosh graphic user interfaceprograms."
