>I seem to recall that Israel has 2 major parties, and a lot of very small parties. Labor brought Israel to the present situation, Likud has (unsuccessfully) been trying to get out of the mess. That' it. I don't think it is about which party is in power. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, isn't Labor and Likud in some sort of coalition now? Shimon Peres is a foreign minister, so they must be in a coalition.

That's how the government works... if the prevailing party can't maintain a majority coalition, there can be a vote of no confidence and there can be an emergency election to vote for a new Prime Minister. The parliamentary system is based on coalitions.

I think it's a good system- it requires the prevailing party to keep other parties happy.

That's why I think Sharon is the wrong person for the job; in fact, his party is the wrong party to be in control right now.

Joe, the only reason I criticize the Likud party and not just Sharon is because the ultra right in the party are pushing him to be as aggressive as possible in the W.B. Sharon is responsible to a coalition but it seems that the Likud voice is the strongest within that coalition.
