No, Mr. Arafat Both of you have it wrong > Rabbi Michael Lerner | No, Mr. Sharon! No Mr. Arafat! Both of you have it wrong!!! We want an end to the violence and an end to the Occupation. Mr. Arafat: Violence is counter-productive. We are Americans who call for an End to the Occupation. But most Israelis have become more fearful that the Palestinian people really wish to kill all Jews?an impression fostered by the random killings of Jews in terrorist attacks against civilians. Yet most Israelis and most Jews around the world would really like to see an end to the oppression of the Palestinian people, if only they could feel that that was a path to safety. There is only way to convince them: reject all forms of violence. Not just terror, but every form of armed resistance. You would be far more powerful and effective if you became a principled advocate of non-violence, following the examples of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. Or look at how powerful Nelson Mandela was?precisely because he took pains to reassure the South African whites that they would be safe after their racist rule ended. The Palestinian people have been very ineffective in giving Israelis a sense of safety. We ask you to renounce all forms of violence, to openly educate your people to the truth that the Palestinian struggle can only be won if Israelis no longer fear that all Palestinians hate them, and systematically uproot from your media and from your educational system all teachings of hate against Jews and Israelis. Mr. Sharon: End the Occupation There is only one way to provide safety for the Jewish people?return to the pre-67 borders of the State of Israel with minor modifications to allow incorporation of the sections of Jerusalem which held a Jewish majority in 2000. Share Jerusalem and let it be the captial of two states. And let Israel play a leading role in putting together an international consortium to provide reparations for the Palestinian people. Do this in a spirit of humility, repentance, and generosity?and you will have lasting security for Israel. Think it's naïve to trust the Palestinian people? Then do all this, but also ask the US to send troops to be the buffer on the borders between these two states. The US would gladly assist were Israel to call for such an international force. But it all boils down to this: does Israel want to hold on to the settlements in the terrirtories, or does Israel want peace? You will never have both. Meanwhile, stop the violence against the Palestinian people. Stop creating new terrorists each day with your house demolitions, random destruction of Palestinian homes, assassinations, sieges of cities, and escalations of violence as punishment. Treat the Palestinian people the way you would wish to be treated--and you will find that you can achieve peace in your time in office. Both sides create and sustain the current mess. Both sides are responsible. Both sides kill civilians. Both sides teach hatred. Both sides are distorted. It?s time for a new path--the path of peace and reconciliation. >> end article tikkun.org Zeev as i look at this, and am thinking, maybe it is too late. I admit to being of a fatalistic attitude since the day Rabin was assasinated. I just said that's it, it's over, now we will just watch the charges and counter charges, and the mutual distrust just build and build as all real action just drowns it a sea of endless rhetoric. But to be truthful, it has gotten worst faster than imagined, that being due to the emergence of the unequivacally evil man, Osama Bin Laden, as Osama has obviously collected all the viciously evil fictions against the jews created by the europeans in the centuries past, got them into arabic and into distribution, and as such, i feel in the overall islamic world Al Queda and Saddam have made evil progress in turning this from a political matter into simply "exterminate the jews". The peace offering of land for peace, and the formal recognition of Israel's Right to Exist supposedly supported by 22 arabic nations.(that is questionable). It would have been headline and joyous news years back but now it doesn't even cause a ripple. It is like everything is TOO LATE. Based on the most recent news any hope is based on Sharon agreeing to a withdrwal, and i don't believe it will happen. I feel Dan Rather's questioning got Sharon to let slip his real agenda and the agenda i feel he has had since he set off the Infitada.(I believe Sharon wanted an Infitada) Outside of a major make peace "intervention", there will be no peace, imo.Max
