The opposite certainly seemed to be true as the Balkans melted down as neighbors who had lived intermixed for generations suddenly turned against each other as the atrocities mounted. I am not saying the Balkans have been peaceful for centuries but many of the communities that tore each other apart had lived peacefully with the recognition that their neighbors, though of different faith, were their neighbors and not "others." -PT
