it is that men veer away from "challenging" women because they have an atavistic desire to be the superior force in a relationship.

I wouldn't put it that way. I have no clue whether it is atavistic or not. I would just say that many men are unsuited to a partnership role with a woman. Those men who are disposed toward either a dominant or submissive relationship role are suitable only for accomplished women who have, er, lowered expectations.
