But this can only exist when they are able to pay off politicians to help them and look the other way. Texas may not have much of a Mafia but it does have some of the crookedest white collar criminals in the world. The S+L debacle was centered there and so was the recent energy debacle. Both gangs gave heavily to mostly GOP politicians and were in turn protected by them. In Bush-Cheney's case it was all in the private club amongst friends and cronies. Massive collusion and a 50 billion dollar ripoff. Plus the White House. Would have been even worse if Jeffords hadn't made the switch. Capitalism beats socialism, in general. Though there are many aspects of socialism which work better, epecially when it comes to care for single mothers and their kids. In this country many put single mothers down and call them immoral, irresponsible welfare hoes (though many want to take away sex education and abortion rights). In better socialist countries they are respected and given daycare, healthcare and therefore can have careers and build normal lives. Makes all the difference. What it boils down to in the US I think is a closet racial issue. As if all single mothers are minority crack addicts. Because there's no virtually no public assistance I've noticed many better-looking single mothers become strippers (legal prostitutes) to raise their kids. And who pays them to strip? Many of the same men who support the GOP platform which refuses to use tax dollars to help them out in the first place. Ironic. Bottomline, capitalism is not always a great thing and socialism is not a dirty word. Aspects of each are positive and necessary but both need to be done right. Oh, and by the way, the US is about 35% socialist. A country like Holland is about 55% socialist. When the GOP calls for lower taxes they move away from socialism. The safety net is pulled. When the Democrats say we need to keep tax rates where they are it's to keep the safety net in place. All a matter of opinion and degrees. But it's the women and the poorer mericans who have less political power who get burned. Under the GOP, assistannce money to them goes instead fo the military and big corporations. if you don't believe me look at billions in corporate tax breaks hidden in Bush's energy program. This explains why women and minorities gravitate toward the Democrats. Because if they're smart they know democrats have their interests in mind. Same with organized labor. The GOP is for less government (though a bigger military through deficit spending) and wants to put more power into the hands of large corporations, especially oil, polluting industries and defence conglomerates, while deregulating them so they can do as they please without fear of indictment. When the GOP demonizes taxes they encourage everyone to cheat and therefore less revenues and fast-growing government debts. when they call for deregulation they unleash greed which preys on our environment and the most needy. They try to cover this by promoting faith-based charities but it never comes close to making up the difference. Fine, says the Religious Right, then everyone should become born again and they can have all the power, including over womens bodies and sexual freedom. Wrong again. I have often tried to like the Republican way of looking at things but every time I investigate it I come away with a nauseous feeling. Frankly, I don't understand why so many non-white non-Christian non-selfish and sexist men vote for them. It might have something to do with all the money they have and how they manipulate public opinion through the media. An example is telling us "it's your money you should have it back", but they never tell you "it's your debt and your social programs we'll be cutting". Anyway - That said, neither party is perfect nor will they ever be. There is no 100% right, just varying degrees of right and wrong. Nothing black or white, all a matter of degrees, but the Democratic platform is clearly better for most people in America, certainly better for our environment and post Cold War foreign relations. As I've said before, the greatest thing to ever happen to Bush was Bin Lauden. Without him I believe Bush's popularity would be fast-fading and he would be a dead duck in 2004. Why? "It's the economy, stupid". Our economy went from almost perfect to bad. And I believe it's going to stay pretty bad until Bush is replaced. This will also bring us higher crime-rates. Always happens when the poor are unemployed. You'll see. Once the War On terror fades out, Bush will have a rough road.
