rats! I knew that was too easy.
well I have some kind of video card problem where the flashing banner ads go berserk and end up looking like japanese anime, flashing hysterically

no idea how to fix that either. :-)

well, if it's not the power saver shut off....it may be getting ready to die....usually you see the colors go funny in that case....monitors generally don't last more than 3 years.

I maintain 5 monitors and replace them fairly regularly.

I had one that did the same thing out of the box. Mine came back on two or three times but then nothing would help. I think there may be a problem, so if it is under warranty send it back. Mine was, new one no problems in the first month. Cheers.

If the power light goes to yellow it's lost the video signal (if you turn your monitor on when your computer is off you'll see the monitor light goes immediately to yellow and stays there). You could check the cable connections (wiggle 'em around a bit to see if it's loose, take a look at the pins in the connector and see if any are visibly bent or short - that is, one sometimes gets pushed back into the connector some). You could try replacing the cable itself if it's not hardwired into the monitor (that is, if it's a cable that can be disconnected at both ends). You could try the monitor and cable (only change one thing at a time) on a different PC or a different video card if you have two, or if you can take the monitor to a friend's.

As with most of these things, it's the diagnosis that is the biggest pain, and if you get on the phone with Dell they'll have you chasing down the same paths before they'll send a replacement one.
