I thought so too. I honestly had no idea what the exact weightings were until I spend the last hour digging up this information for us.

Interesting differences in the SOX and SMH.

SOX Components and its weightings. Apparently equal amounts of shares must lead to overweighting in the higher priced issues. As of Friday KLAC had the lion's share of weight:

Semiconductor Holder and its weightings:

nasdaq.com

The SOX gives much greater weightings to semi equipment stocks today as opposed to the SMH which maintains its weighting on specific issues with INTC being the most important. KLAC only gets a 3% weight.
