Confessions of an Israeli reservist from BBC
"The most terrible thing is to go into houses and see that they are just regular families. The children with their wide frightened eyes, I find very difficult. We all have kids at home.

"We are serving here because it is our duty. But I don't know where it is leading and we would all rather be at home."

news.bbc.co.uk;

Mani, of course, this will be turned into an example of the cowardice of Israeli soldiers and yet their arguments are the same as neutral observers who are not at risk to fight.

I understand that US soldiers made similar comments during the Vietnamese War but US generals said they had the overview and they knew what was best.............right!!

Nothing particularly incriminating here... lots of people in America are against the war in Afghanistan, too.

Actually, most of the Israeli people seem to support the current Israeli actions... I was speaking to the father of three Israeli solders (I work with him), and he was telling me that normally when soldiers are called up, there are many absences, due to school, or sickness, or any other number of excuses... this time, actually, in many places, many more showed up than expected, and his son, who was expecting to see action, was actually kept stationed.

Another quote from your article:

>"The people are not being held hostage by the terrorists, they sympathise with them. They think terrorism is going to help their national cause."

That's exactly it. Terrorism is not caused by despair... it's caused by the belief that it will work, and sometimes it does.
