This kinda sucks in here - we got a bump from Bear on AWE - and it has sank all day. There is still stock for sale - but from what levels? To quote Butch Cassidy - "Who are these guys?"

BEAR STEARNS Intra-Day First Call Notes

AT&T Wireless (AWE - $8.18) Buy
Todd Rethemeier - Telecom Services/Wireless
* Bloomberg reported this morning AWE and Cingular (a joint venture between SBC and BellSouth) are in merger talks. We have long expected this may be the first announced combination of national wireless operators.
* A merger between these cos. would make a lot of sense. Cingular does not have a complete national footprint (missing Minneapolis, Phoenix, Denver, Pittsburgh, etc.) and is lacking the spectrum to migrate to 3G WCDMA. A merger with AWE would solve both of these issues, as well as provide significant operating and capital expenditure synergies.
* Regulatory approval of a deal is somewhat of an unknown.
* In addition to savings for the combined companies, we believe removing a national competitor from the mix could help the entire wireless industry.
