I would recommend that you take the new hard drive, since it has been offered. You are going to have to reinstall all of your software regardless of whether you overwrite the existing HD, or install a new one. Finally, you might consider that this is an excellent time to consider for a fresh install of Windows XP (or Linux).

I'll try for a new hard drive. The Gateway techie did mention that it would be one or the other but we'll see who gets to decide, me or them....

I see you don't think WXP is a problem. Here's an email I got from a friend I mentioned it to:

About Windows XP: it is an unbelievable bit of chutzpa on Microsoft's
part. It reports to them every time you log in and won't let you use your
computer unless they say it's ok. It keeps a record of your personal
information at a master databank. And that's just the beginning. People
who follow these things are horrified with it and are using Windows 2000
instead, which doesn't have those features.

What do you think about that? Actually the having my privacy violated bothers me less, personally, than a mention made by somebody else that i'll have to call MS if there are changes in my computer. Or something like that. Also there was a question raised about whether since the XP was given to me (by an MS employee) could it be registered in my name. That I can ask him about.
