Hi, Gottfried. I've been mostly sticking to the word processor because I have a project to finish before I take the time to address the hard drive noises and crashes. It's a race, do I finish first or does the hard drive fry first?! (The noises never happen when just Word is being used, and sometimes they don't happen when I'm on the net.)

You said >she said they'd either write zeros or give me a new hard drive.< If you reformat [write zeros], all information on the HD will be lost, so you have to reinstall programs from the system restore CD anyway. I think your restore CD will give you several options. Why not look and see what they are?

There are, on the Gateway System Restore kit (3 discs), a System Restore process that "restores the computer to the way it was when you received your system," which of course loses all your files, so is a "last resort."

And there are some applications listed like printer drivers, Helpspot, PC Doctor, some wallpaper. Those are installed.

Among the ones "not installed" are RealPlayer (which is in fact installed), Norton anti-virus 2001 update (I paid for the most recent Norton Virus program not too long ago and I get lots of virus scans and updates), Acrobat Reader 4.05 (I know I have some Acrobat Reader installed), and CD Back, which I don't know about, but I do have some program like that installed.
