Harpers recently had a cover story about how there is very little, or no archealogical evidence to back up early claims of the bible (exodus, 40 year sojourn in the desert, etc). But as you say it doesn't matter, the Jewish state is a reality, has a good reason for being, and needs to be defended from the hordes of people willing to do very bad things. Koran is also the most influential book ever, if you believe it or not. As is the Baghavadgita (sp). I think the ME problems should be viewed from a more secular angle, because there is a ton of religious text out there, and you can read almost anything into them.
