My dissertation research (long time ago) was focused on learning motivation. The art of teaching (currently) is almost in opposition to the intrinsic nature of learning motivation. The human condition naturally leans us in the direction of striving for growth. The art of teaching is more focused on performance motivation (rewards and punishments) managed by the instructer. Intrinsic learning motivation can be guided but is more likely to be snuffed by an external system of managed rewards and punishments than encouraged. The good teachers are the one's who somehow know this intuitively and are able to tap into it. It has a lot to do with encouraging "self determination." Heavily frowned upon in our system. Like it or not, the education system is a formal means of indoctrinating our youth. The current struggle is more about which docrines than whether or not this is good.
