So does this mean that the die was only shrunk in one direction? Excuse my naiveté, but isn't it odd for one of the dimensions to remain at 11mm?

It must have been more than a shrink.

Yeah, it is odd. That was one of the things that fueled the speculation of a 512k L2 cache.
