I would argue with you that many of the nifty fifty haven't tanked as badly. Quite a few of those issues have never really come back, (and I think we are talking around 25-30 years here) so if you were in the wrong ones you could have lost much of your investment, even if you considered yourself diversified - by purchasing a basket of them. Stocks like Polaroid, Xerox, Kodak, etc. Stars of the day. If you recall the nifty fifty then you also recall the 'conglomerate craze'. Remember those - issues such as LTV, Teledyne, ITT. Harold Geneen of ITT was one of the 'management geniuses' of his day... Henry Singleton was the hotshot who put together Teledyne. Thing is, most of these fads fade away and never come back. As for tech, it might not fade away but it certainly changes, and few former stars get to do the trick again.
