I can imagine benefits but the risks at this point seem to far out weight the benefits. Thus I am in favour of the typical position of the FDA. That is, if someone else does go ahead and do it and we see sufficient safe gaurds we can reconsider the issue. I think it's important to distinguish the research from the application. We can do the research and still hold back on the application until we see how things work elsewhere. What is on the table now is legislation to make the research illegal. I think that would be a huge mistake. If we're going to legislate something, lets's legislate the problem you've mentioned, which is how cautious the FDA should be about approving procedures. Let's legislate specific to protecting our people against misuse of the technology, not to stick our heads in the sand about the whole field of technology.

Oh Brave New World.... .....Do we want to be responsible for determining social castes? After all, not everyone can be an Alpha- plus, someone has to work on the factory line, and Alpha- pluses tend to get bored and rebel if they have insufficient mental stimulation in their work. Thus, we can start determining need, and supplying a sufficient number of Gamma minuses for the simpler tasks, Gamma pluses to act as foremen and more skilled laborers, and Beta minuses to act as white collar floor supervisors, or managers of fast food outlets. Maybe we can perfect the Bokonovsky procedure, and create Deltas and Epsilons en masse. Of course, we should accelerate work on soma forthwith, and develop ceremonies honoring " Our Ford"..........
