<<Are you saying you disagree with Bush's opposition to higher fuel efficiency standards?>>

I think the standards have been pushed about as hard as the technology now can make them. Remember the first CAFE standards way back? People bought foreign cars and dumped the American cars. Right now there are 2 ways to get more mpg.

1. Make them lighter, more plastic.

2. Convince the soccer moms to buy cars instead of SUVs.

Which is going to happen? Neither. Safety.

Why worry about burning less gas when we have Ethanol. Burns clean and uses up our excess corn production.

Bush's opposition to higher fuel efficiency discredits anything he says on the environment, conservation, etc. The only reason anything "clean" is even in his energy bill is because public opinion and moderates forced him to put it in. After he was elected he and Cheney were against conservation. Cheney made fun of it, remember? They were for burning as much as possible, losing pollution regulations and going into every available wildland source of fuel possible. And they wanted prices extra high to make it more profitable. That is when the American people say "whoa, assholes" and their big Enronization phony shortage "energy crisis" started unraveling. Bush-Cheney are the worst team on energy and environment ever to be in power. They think nothing of leeting Big Oil rip us off for tens of billions. But who should be surprised? Look at where they come from? Just paying back their campaign contributors and other pals.
