Tim: Thus we have the spectacle of SI's chief censor--who I am assuming is "SI Administrator Jeff," as his is the only name we ever see

Wasn't there an "SI Admin Bob" or something years ago who was pretty decent? I believe he was the victim of some SI downsizing&#133

Yeah, maybe Mani's thread is more censorious than most...but this means it should be Mani and His Gang doing the censoring, flawed though their popularity contest style of voting may be, not "SI Administrator Jeff" holding Elmer to a higher standard of behavior than is routinely seen on other threads.

I would actually prefer it if the TOU could be enforced by Site Admins in such a maner that the more nasty personal attacks were avoided. I practice, however, I would agree with you that it can quickly turn into a "I'm gonna tell on you" situation&#133

Other than that, I believe you seriously misinterpret the moderation on this thread.

tcmay:

"If Steve Harrris or NiceGuy or Win Smith or Bacchus makes these kinds of slurs, here on the Mind Control AMD thread, nothing happens. But if Intel supporters defend themselves, Mani announces that "a vote has been called."

Ah, c'mon, tim...please don't lump us in with the guy whose posts are highlighted in post #77139...Surely you can overcome your INTC commonality with this guy for a second to see just how far out of line he is...There is absolutely zero excuse for responding in that matter, even if there was any substance to his false claims of motivation...This guy, if, a senior employee at INTC, needs to understand that his public "whining","false accusations","errors in judgment" and defamation reflect poorly not only on himself but also on INTC...he may be impressed with his condescending and demeaning comments, but I doubt if the head of human relations at INTC would be too impressed were he/she to read post #77139...I'd have to think, there are fortune 500 companies out there who would fire an employee for carrying on in public in such a manner...elmer should count himself fortunate if it is only SI that suspends him for 7 days!!!

In my many years on the Net, I've run into this "moderation" or "censorship" problem many times. While maybe well-intentioned, most censorship regimes rapidly degenerate into quixotic exercises in "I'mgonna _tell_ on you!" and "But _he_ started it!" behavior.

And the censors who rule from afar are usually the worst...

It boils down to who narcs out the others. "I'm gonna _tell_!"
