Following the Government of Ireland Act 1920, 26 of Ireland's 32 counties left the United Kingdom and formed the Irish Free State. In 1949 this became the Republic of Ireland.

In 2002 you say "Northern Ireland once looked just as hopeless. It's been quiet for a while now. Maybe there is hope."

Does that imply, once there's a Palestinian homeland things will be looking up after about 50 years?

Actually, there was no especial Jewish/Arab tension prior to the rise of Zionism, so the Irish thing is much longer, starting at least with Cromwell.....
